Sulfur Denitrators
A sulfur denitrator is a simple filter based on the
principle that if the correct environment is provided, natural bacteria
will convert nitrates into nitrogen gas. This gas is then released
through the water and leaves the aquarium. Nitrogen gas makes up well
over 50% of our atmosphere and it is perfectly safe.
The sulfur in the first chamber provides the correct environment for
the beneficial bacteria. This is where the denitrification process
takes place. During this process the pH will naturally be lowered. A
second chamber is filled with aragonite gravel which will naturally
raise the pH as well as add fresh calcium to your system. Often this
will reduce and in some case eliminate the need for calcium additives.
The only other way to remove nitrates from your system is by water
changes. Lots of large water changes. I've worked with clients whose
nitrate levels had reached critical levels. In some case 180+ ppm. They
were exhausted from multiple large water changes only to see their
nitrate levels had dropped very little. Now they enjoy the comfort of
being able to feed their fish and corals without the fear of a nitrate
spike.
I personally own a sulfur denitrator I purchased from DTI, Inc. It has
been running on my tank for more than a year. It has worked flawlessly.
My nitrates can not be registered on an API test kit.
